Basque Travels in September

This photo journal covers a month long family and friends vacation at a villa in the Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne agglomeration of the French Basque region. The area now competes with Provence as a go-to vacation and second-home destination for Parisians. There are Atlantic beaches galore with numerous world famous surfing venues such as Biarritz and Capbreton. Nearby are the western Pyrenees and northern Spain with its celebrated ocean resorts of San Sebastían and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Inland are the medieval village gems of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Cambo-les-Bains, Ainhoa and Espelette. Madrid is five hours away by car. Basque culture manifests head-on in its cuisine: spreads of designer tapas, cured ham, pâtés, cod dishes in piperade and drinkable wines. Cafés are lively and abundant. Also, half-timbered residences painted in Basque red, blue or green are ubiquitous. For those so inclined, there are more than a dozen golf courses.

Grand Tour Remake

This 25-day travelogue kicks off in Dublin to savor the sights, sounds and fare of the Irish Republic capital city before busing to play golf and bask in the sumptuousness of the Adare Manor resort. Then we wing our way to Munich for a one-day tour of the old city, an up close visit of Nymphenburg Palace and dining on plates of Bavarian schnitzels, sausages and dumplings before amping the tour by motoring in a rental car through the Alps to Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Tuscany, Umbria and Rome. Along the way we experience the fleeting tribulations of navigating Medieval city streets and vertiginous seaside roadways only to be rewarded by the adventures that lie ahead. We are treated to rich landscapes, architectural masterpieces, religious and cultural histories, innumerable art treasures and a variety of country and regional cuisines. Among the delights were the opportunities to admire in person 14 of Caravaggio’s paintings housed in Florence and Rome.
